- In the 14th century, the Spaniards brought orange seedlings to the island of Curacao. But the sweet variety did not take root in arid land, because of the lack of fresh water, trees gave small and bitter fruits. Realizing that the sweet oranges in such conditions do not grow, the Spaniards abandoned plantations. However, in the 16th century, the Dutch settlers, noticed a new variety of oranges and gave it the name "laraha". In the 17th century the plantations switched owners and became owned by Petrus De Kuyper. Enterprising owner did not destroy the plants, but decided to give the bitter oranges a chance in alcoholic beverages. In 300 years, in the early 20th century, blue curacao, a popular blue liquor, was created.
